A river can be defined as a natural stream of fresh water that flows towards an ocean or a sea. In some cases, the river dries up or flows in to the ground instead of flowing towards the sea. In India there are various rivers, each one of them flowing through its own route. The rivers of India provide water for drinking, irrigation, for generating electricity etc. In India, rivers also play an important role in the Hindu mythology and are considered holy by the people. In one way or the other these holy rivers have a vast significance in the life of each & every Hindu. There are various holy rivers in India of which some are listed below-

Brahmaputra River The Brahmaputra River originates from the sacred Mansarovar Lake near the holy Mount Kailash, in Tibet and flows all along the Himalayan range before entering India through the state of Arunachal Pradesh. In Tibet it is known as Tsangpo, while in India it has been named after the son of the Lord Brahma. On the way, it is joined by various tributaries before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. It is highly revered by the Hindus.

River Ganges/Ganga The Ganges River is well known throughout the world as an important religious icon. The river is a spiritual center and it is believed that by taking a dip in its holy water, one can free himself of various sins. The Ganges River originates from the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet and then flows through India before emptying itself in the Bay of Bengal. Various holy places like Haridwar and Varanasi are situated along the banks of this river. River Ganges is mentioned in various Hindu epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata. It is believed that if after death the remains of the person are released in the River Ganges then the soul gets peace.

River Yamuna The River Yamuna originates from the Champasar Glacier in Uttarkhand. The River Yamuna has a very important place in the Hindu mythology. There is a temple located near the origin site of Yamuna and is devoted to Goddess Yamunotri.

Cauvery / Kaveri River It is one of the most holy rivers in the southern part of India. It originates from the Brahmagiri Hill, Karnataka. The fame of the river is also mentioned in the Tamil literature.

Godavari River The Godavari River originated from the Western Ghats and flows all the way to the Eastern Ghats. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that by taking bath here, one get freed from all his/her sins. There are various other holy rivers like Sarasvati River, Narmada River, and Krishna River etc.
