The term Islam refers to a monotheistic religion that originated from the holy teachings of Muhammad. The term Islam means Submission i.e. the complete surrender of one’s body as well as soul to god. According to Islam, there is only one god i.e. Allah and Muhammad was a follower of Allah. All the people who follow Islam are termed as Muslim. Islam is the 2nd largest religion in whole world, just behind Christianity. There are around 1.61 billion Muslims all over the globe. There are two types of Muslims i.e. the Shi'a and the Sunni. All the Muslims have to follow the famous 5 pillars of Islam so as to be a true Muslim. The five pillars include the famous pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are various holy places of the Muslims, which are largely visited by the Muslims throughout the year. Most of the Muslim pilgrimage places are situated in the Middle East and Asia. The chief pilgrimage of the Muslim is the Hajj.

Hajj The Hajj refers to Muslim pilgrimage to the holy place of Mecca. In the whole world, Mecca is the largest annual pilgrimage place. It also forms the all important fifth pillar of the Muslims. According to the Islamic tradition, an able-bodied Muslim has to visit the Mecca at least once in their life. This pilgrimage is undertaken so as to display unity of all the Muslim people.

The pilgrimage to Hajj is undertaken from 6th to 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. Hajj is related to Muhammad life and thus is the most important pilgrimage place of the Muslims. There are various rules and rituals that the Muslim has to follow, while visiting the Mecca. The person should walk seven times counter-clockwise about the Kaaba (building). The person should kiss the holy Black stone. One also has to drink the water from Zamzam Well.

Muslim pilgrimage in India In India, there are a large number of Muslims spread all over the country. There are various Muslim pilgrimages in India too; some of them are listed below.

• Jama Masjid-
It is the most important Muslim pilgrimage place in India. It is located in the capital city of Delhi. The mosque was constructed by Shahjahan in the year 1656. The mosque has three domes and two minarets.


• Ajmer Sharif-
The Ajmer Sharif is the resting place of the 'Gharib-Nawaz' and is situated in the city of Ajmer. The place is visited by a large number of Muslim devotees each and every year.


• Haji Ali-
It is located in the open sea in Mumbai. A narrow path leads towards the mosque.

Ajmer-e-Sharief The Dargah Sharif, located at the foot of a barren hill, is the place where the Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chistis' mortal remains lie buried.	Bibi Ka Maqbara Bibi Ka Maqbara is built by Prince Azam Shah, son of Emperor Aurangzeb. It was built in 17th century. Prince Azam Shah has dedicated it as a tribute for his mother, Rabia Durrani.
Big Mosque Big Mosque is one of the most famous and beautiful mosques in Chennai. This mosque is located in the Janbazar area of Triplicane in Chennai.	Haji Ali Dargah Haji Ali Dargarh is one of the most recognised landmarks in Mumbai, the Dargah is located in a small islet off the coast in Worli, Mumbai.
