There are many religions in the world which include Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism etc. Let’s throw some light on Sikhism which is the 5th largest religion of the world. Sikhism is based on the Guru Nanak Dev’s and the nine successive guru’s teachings. This system of spiritual expression and philosophy is traditionally known as the Sikh dharma or the Gurmat. Another place which holds a lot of importance in the religion Sikhism is gurudwara.



A gurudwara is a Sikh worship place and it means “the doorway to the guru”. A gurudwara is also called as a Sikh temple. A gurudwara is open for people of all religious backgrounds. One of the highly famous gurudwaras in the world is Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) situated in the state of Amristsar, Punjab.



A gurudwara is a place where there is no discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, color; sex etc. one can look forward to the following while visiting a gurudwara:



  • Prayer –
  • One can participate in the Sikh style of worshipping in the gurudwara with the divine presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book.
  • Langar –
  • Free food is served in the gurudwara with no discrimination at all.
  • Celebrations –
  • Gurpurabs, the significant days of gurus are marked with great fanfares.
  • Selfless Service –
  • Selfless service for the humanity is induced in a person visiting a gurudwara.
  • Kirtan –
  • Holy hymns are sung with full devotion.
  • Akhand Path –
As a priority, Akhand Path i.e. the continuous recitation of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, is done for 3 days.



Etiquettes and Customs in a Gurudwara



  • One is expected to dress appropriately while visiting a gurudwara for avoiding distraction of people from the prayer or worshipping.




  • A person is also supposed to remove his/her shoes before entering the main prayer hall (Darbar Hall/ Darbar Sahib).




  • One should not go to a gurudwara after the consumption of drugs or alcohol or any tobacco products.




  • A person is also expected to cover his/her head after entering in the premises of a gurudwara.
