Gurdwara Sis Ganj, a Sikh pilgrimage, was built on the land where the Mughals in 1675 AD. martyred the Sikh Guru Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur. There are nine historic Gurudwaras, associated with important events , which had a great bearing on the history of Punjab and changed it's course and direction. Consequently it became a renowned place of pilgrimage , being the sacred city, as the five Gurus visited the capital . Various Gurudwaras have been constructed to commemorate their visits. Thousands of pilgrims throng these holy shrines everyday to listen to kirtan ( devotional music ) from Granth Sahib.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib was built to commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur. It is situated in Chandni Chowk, on the same site where Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered the beheading of Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur in the year 1675. It is said that when Guru Tegh Bahadur died, no one had the courage to pick up his body. Suddenly, it started raining heavily. Then, two of the brave followers of Guruji took his head and body and fled. The head was taken to Chakk Nanaki in Anandpur Sahib, while the body was taken to the place where Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib now stands.

The main structure of the Gurudwara is a large open hall. This is very spacious and has a bronze canopy in the middle under which, the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs is kept. The Guru Granth Sahib is covered with a large red tunic cloth and garlands. At night, the book is ceremonially carried to a special room in the gurudwara. Here it is kept in a transparent and well-lit glass chamber for the visitors. The book is kept there in a special-resting closet. It is surrounded by the pieces of tree trunk of the same banyan tree under which the Guru was martyred. There is also an enclosed structure where the guru was held prisoner before being executed.

The divine legend :

This Gurdwara is associated with the Ninth Guru, Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. It marks the site where Guru Sahib was martyred on the orders of the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb had unleashed a reign of terror and ordered that Hindus be forcibly converted to Islam. On the request of Kashmiri Pandits, Guru Sahib took up their cause and told them to tell the Emperor that if he could convince the Guru to embrace Islam, they would all do so.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib embraced martyrdom in Delhi on November 11th, 1675. Bhai Jaita and his associates brought his head to Chakk Nanaki. The cremation of the head of Guru Sahib was held here on November 17th, 1675. The trunk of that tree under which the Guru was martyred and the well where he took his daily bath while in prison are preserved here to this day.

Special Event / Annual Event:

Music and song are considered to be one of the special ways in Sikhism to gain union with God. The singing of 'gurbani', holy songs and reading from their holy book marks the festivals of Sikhs. The best time to experience the festivity is during the birthdays of all their 10 gurus (religious teachers) and especially that of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. Baisakhi and Bandi Chhor Divas (Diwali) are other festivals when the celebration is at its peak among the community..
